Soup Watch Holiday Edition

Welcome to this month's edition of SoupWatch! I am Jessyta and I will be bring you tips to keep your account safe every month or so right here on soup-faerie.com. If you have anything you would like to see here, feel free to neomail me.

This month's theme is Neopian Urban Legends. Some scammers have come up with some pretty creative stories to try and get you to give them your items or neopoints. This article will help you recogonize which are truthful, and which are not.

Items and their fake special effects

Sometime people will try to get someone to buy their item by saying it does special things, like changes your pet's appearence. Here is a little list of items that will not change your pet's color:
Starberry
Rainbowberry
Paint Brush Plushies
Jelly

Using a bit of common sense when dealing with these kind of scams should keep you safe. When you compare items that definatly change your pet's color (paint brushes and morphing potions) to items that supposedly change your pet's color, a large difference in price is a indicator that a person is trying to scam you. Why would someone sell a Starberry for less then 6,000 np (based on shop wizard price when this was written) when all other items that make your pet Starry cost over 100,000? Smart players know that no one would take such a huge profit loss.

Also beware of items that look like weapons but are not:
Bendy Sword of Skardsen
Fake Rod of Ultranova
Fake Ancient Manchu Bow
Chocolate Ghostkersword

Fake Places

Most players have heard of the Hidden Tower and the Meridell Dump, but what about the Hidden Junkyard? Or the Dark Faerie's Tower? Beware of people who try to sell you the links to these places, because they don't exist! At best you will lose out on a codestone or faerie (or whatever the scammer is selling the link for), at worst you may end up going to a site with a cookie grabber and losing your entire account! Remember, if it doesn't start with http://www.neopets.com then it is not part of the Neopets game!
Never waste your hard earned points or items buying information! You can easily get information like that from the Neopet's chat boards, or here at soup-faerie.com.

NP doesn't grow on trees!

Another way scammers get your account info is by creating pages they claim will give you free neopoints and/or items, but really do nothing other then take your name and password. NEVER enter your password into a webpage other then when you are logging into Neopets.com, and to prevent your cookies from being grabbed, it's safest to aviod any site that someone claims will help you get rich quick. There is no such thing as a neopoint generator, don't let those scammers trick you into believe there is!

That's it for this month. Next month I will be covering cookie grabbers: what they are and what you need to know to keep yourself safe. Until then, remember to play safe!
